This workshop will familiarize participants with the newly-developed national French Standards. Presenters will share the document with participants and go through the various sections of the document: introduction, performance descriptors based on proficiency levels, and learning scenarios based on proficiency levels. We will also break participants into groups to work with learning scenarios. Participants will become familiar with the French standards and return to their classrooms with new ideas about how to use the standards in their curriculum.

AATF Advocacy Efforts are Ongoing: Learn More About the Support that is Available

This workshop will pair the AATF Commissions on Teacher Recruitment & Retention and on Advocacy to discuss the many ways in which our commissions and volunteers work to support and defend French program. Connecting secondary and post-secondary programs is a major focus of the Commission on Teacher Recruitment & Retention. What’s in it for my students? For my program? For my profession? Post-secondary French programs are under pressure, perhaps as never before. Find out why this is important to K-16 teachers and what role you can play in building a strong high school to college connection to encourage lifelong learning and to promote careers in French. Ready-to-use resources and teacher-recommended strategies will be provided. The Commission on Advocacy, in addition to providing ongoing support to individual programs, will address the recent declines in post-secondary enrollments within the larger context of the crisis in the humanities. All this is occuring while French is still the second most-studied foreign language in the U.S. at both the K-12 and college levels. Advocacy is needed, now more than ever, and everyone can help!

Langue, Lexique, et Littérature: Incorporating Louisiana French Language and Culture into the Classroom

The presenters will seek to contextualize French Louisiana and share strategies, materials, & sources related to Louisiana’s Francophonie.
Kress (Carnival Characters—Publishing in French Louisiana) will discuss how French programs privilege the great French classics while giving a nod to the Francophone world. The experience often remains foreign to students who may lack the needed cultural or linguistic sophistication. Yet, Louisiana possesses a venerable French literature that is growing, available, and will not be foreign to students. Build enrollment with American literature—in French!
Lindner (Bringing Louisiana French into French Education in Louisiana) will introduce the evolution of French instruction in Louisiana, from second language lessons to French in immersion programs. The final step is introducing Louisiana French within established programs, introducing students to the unique varieties of French in Louisiana alongside academic French.
Smith (Louisiana French in Remote Teaching) will address the integration of Louisiana French in the transition to remote teaching of lower-level university courses. Building upon the intentional inclusion of Louisiana-focused materials, we have developed resources to integrate new, authentic multimedia materials to make the Francophonie of Louisiana more accessible to students.
White will address some common misunderstandings about Louisiana French. Her presentation will focus on a few lexical items that explain what the Louisiana variety of French has in common with other varieties and what is specifically Louisianian.

Caribbean and Louisiana Culture in French Textbooks: A Critical Perspective
Feedback Survey
The presenter will discuss the findings of a study on the inclusion and presentation of Caribbean and Louisiana culture in French textbooks and a survey of teachers’ instructional practices. Using Content Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, and a Likert scale survey, the findings suggest there to be few instances of bias, exclusions, and distortions. Participants suggested that there are obvious instances of bias, exclusions, and distortions and thus try to address them in their teaching practices.

From Marketing to Warmongering: Early Maps of Québec and Louisiana
Feedback Survey
Maps can engage students of all levels to the role France played in the New World. From Champlain’s sketch of Québec City to Moll’s beaver vignette, we notice an abundance of fish and furs that attracted early colonists. Franquet’s map of an Iroquois village adjacent to a Jesuit mission also highlights the role of French missionaries. It can also be argued that competing maps helped instigate the Seven Year’s War – comparing De L’Isle’s Carte de la Louisiane where the Carolinas are French territory to Mitchell’s Map of North America where Louisiana becomes British. The presenter will conclude by examining some of the earliest settlement maps of New Orleans.

Creating an After-School French Language and Culture Club for K-12 French Teacher Training

The presenter will explain how to create and carry out a partnership with local schools in order to provide pre-service language teachers with more real-world teaching experience prior to entering the classroom full-time. This partnership, integrated into the teaching practicum accompanying a teaching methods course, allowed K-12 world language education majors to create an after-school French club. Participants successfully designed and taught mini-lessons on French language and culture to local students virtually throughout the semester.

Music in the Saddlebag: the Abbé François Picquet

At the end of the Seven Years War, the missionary François Picquet escaped Montreal and fled to New Orleans. He carried with him a little manuscript book, bound in soft buckskin, containing Catholic hymns translated into Mohawk. Based on research carried out in Chicago, New Orleans, and Bourg-en-Bresse, the presenter will trace the travels of the manuscript, present Picquet’s transatlantic, multiracial world, and reveal his involvement with linguistic projects in the Bressan dialect.

The presenter will argue that the breadth of Francophone cultures make the French language classroom uniquely posed to incorporate antiracist pedagogy and that instructors must engage in antiracist pedagogy to best support all students. Jazz-Age Paris and the Other American Colony
The power of place will be remarkable,” so wrote philosopher Aristotle. And for Americans, Paris holds the promise of creative freedom, culture, egalitarianism, and beauty. Thomas Jefferson discovered this in the eighteenth century; Edith Wharton in the nineteenth century; and the Lost Generation – Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Stein – in the twentieth century, after the devastation of the First World War. Today’s breakout though will focus on the “Other Americans,” namely African Americans, and particularly African American women—the aspiring artists, singers, dancers, novelists, nightclub owners, and the community they forged with other members of the African Diaspora in Paris after the Great War.

1. Why was Paris so evocative to members of the African Diaspora?

2.     For the African American women discussed, what did the city symbolize that the United States in the 1920s-1930s did not? Why did many of them return to the US?
