Integrating Language Memoirs into the Classroom
This presenter will show how language memoirs written by acclaimed bilingual authors can be used to improve students’ reading skills, promote metalinguistic awareness and intercultural competence, and inspire students to write their own autobiographie langagière by reflecting on their language learning experience. She will show examples of language memoirs written by students and evaluation rubrics. Attendees will examples of resources, activities, and ideas to incorporate language memoirs in their classes.

Teaching French in New Orleans in the 18th Century: The Ursuline Method
The Ursuline nuns arrived in New Orleans from Rouen in 1727 with the goals of educating girls in Christian doctrine and teaching them to read and write French. The methods they used produced two generations of highly literate woman in the 18th century and offer modern French teachers useful pedagogical strategies.

Caribbean and Louisiana Culture in French Textbooks: A Critical Perspective
The presenter will discuss the findings of a study on the inclusion and presentation of Caribbean and Louisiana culture in French textbooks and a survey of teachers’ instructional practices. Using Content Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis, and a Likert scale survey, the findings suggest there to be few instances of bias, exclusions, and distortions. Participants suggested that there are obvious instances of bias, exclusions, and distortions and thus try to address them in their teaching practices.

TPRS and the Francophone World
Many teachers have found success teaching with CI, specifically with TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). Students have fun, and their proficiency level increases quickly as they focus on high-frequency structures in French. A great TPRS curriculum can sometimes fall short when it comes to introducing students to real people who speak French. Children Have Rights, Too! A Comprehensive Unit for the AP Classroom
Increase vocabulary while also introducing AP themes and tasks. The Convention of the Rights of the Child serves as a point of departure to discover and discuss the issues facing children around the world. Materials include exercises and activities to accompany authentic videos, pamphlets, and websites. Students work on interpretive listening and reading and presentational speaking and writing while broadening their intercultural competence. Motivation is high as students engage with contemporary global issues.
