The Ursuline nuns arrived in New Orleans from Rouen in 1727 with the goals of educating girls in Christian doctrine and teaching them to read and write French. The methods they used produced two generations of highly literate woman in the 18th century and offer modern French teachers useful pedagogical strategies.
